Across The Horizon Announcement!
Northern Spy Records & SUSS' very own Bob Holmes to debut new artist-curated music series announced with the goal of broadening the landscape of instrumental music.
Hello all, we have a very special and exciting announcement! Today, Bob, along with Nothern Spy Records, announced a new music series called “Across the Horizon.” Based on the concept of Bob’s popular podcast series “Ambient Country,” now in its third season, eight innovators have been invited from the wide landscape of instrumental music to participate in the first volume, with the mission of exploration, curation, collaboration and discovery. Each of these artists will also act as a curator, selecting two other artists to submit original music for the series alongside their own contributions.
Artist/curators in the initial volume of “Across the Horizon” include Mark Nelson (Labradford, Pan American), Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers, Heavy Gus), Marisa Anderson, Dave Harrington (The Darkside, Morisette), Luke Schneider, Walt McClements, David Moore (Bing & Ruth, Cowboy Sadness) and William Tyler.
Northern Spy will be releasing new music from the collection at regular intervals over the course of the 12 month series, culminating in a double vinyl album and risograph zine available exclusively to Bandcamp subscribers of the series. The music will also be available digitally on all platforms.
The first drop of three tracks will feature Chicago-based Mark Nelson, who has chosen Chelsea Bridge and MJ Guider as fellow artists for the series. Mark is best known for his work in the post-rock band Labradford as well as his pioneering long-standing solo project Pan American. His use of guitar-driven ambient music in the 90’s forged a whole new path for instrumental music. Chicago-based musician and experimental artist Mallory Linehan aka Chelsea Bridge uses the violin to create dark, disquieting soundscapes, and Melissa Guion aka MJ Guider, is a New Orleans-based artist whose work encompasses a variety of melded sounds from shoegaze to techno.
The entire series is being mastered by another legend in the instrumental genre, guitarist and pedal steel player Chuck Johnson, who has worked with artists such as Balmorhea, Andrew Tuttle, Claire Rousay, & Daniel Bachman. Designer and curator Lisa Glenn Armstrong will be creating the visual artwork for the series.
The first three-track release in the Across the Horizon series is available to subscribers now and to the public on Sept 4. Read more info here!
